Basic Definitions of EPA,HEPA and ULPA Filters

What is EPA Filters ?

EPA stands for Efficient Particulate Air filter, a high-performance filter that bridges the gap between ordinary filters and HEPA filters. These filters are classified into three efficiency levels—E10, E11, and E12—based on international standards like ISO 29463 or EN 1822. Here’s how they perform:

E10: Minimum filtration efficiency of 85% for MPPS (most penetrating particle size) micron particles.

E11: Minimum filtration efficiency of 95% for MPPS micron particles.

E12: Minimum filtration efficiency of 99.5% for MPPS micron particles. These filters are ideal for environments requiring enhanced air quality without the stringent requirements of HEPA filters.

What is HEPA Filters ?

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter, a device specifically designed to remove tiny particles from the air with exceptional efficiency. International standards such as EN 1822 (Europe) and ISO 29463 (Global) define two main classes for HEPA filters:

H13: Filtration efficiency of ≥99.95% for MPPS micron particles (European standard).

H14: Filtration efficiency of ≥99.995% for MPPS micron particles (European standard).

In the U.S., HEPA filters follow standards like ASHRAE 52.2 or DOE, requiring a filtration efficiency of at least 99.97% for 0.3-micron particles.

HEPA filters are widely used in critical environments such as hospitals, laboratories, and cleanrooms, where air purity is crucial.

What Is MPPS?

MPPS stands for Most Penetrating Particle Size, which refers to the particle size at which a filter has the lowest filtration efficiency. For glass fiber filters, MPPS typically ranges between 0.12 μm and 0.25 μm. For membrane materials, the MPPS value is generally smaller than 0.1 μm, with common PTFE filter materials having an MPPS of approximately 0.07 μm.

This parameter is critical for understanding a filter’s performance, as it ensures that even the most challenging particles to capture are addressed effectively.

HEPA Filter FAQs

Typically, HEPA filters last 6 months to 2 years, depending on the environment and usage.

Clogged filters increase pressure drop, energy consumption, and operational costs.

For homes, use H13 (99.95%); for cleanrooms or medical use, choose H14 (99.995%) or higher.

Prices depend on filter media, efficiency grade, production techniques, and certifications.

Replace it if resistance rises, airflow decreases, or the filter exceeds its lifespan.

Install in the airflow direction, ensure a tight seal, and work in a clean environment.

Most HEPA filters are single-use; some PTFE filters may allow washing.

Use pre-filters, maintain proper airflow, and select appropriate efficiency levels.

HEPA filters trap airborne viruses and bacteria but do not kill them.

High-quality filters do not, but old filters can grow mold or release odors.

Store in a dry, clean place with intact packaging to avoid damage.

Noise may indicate clogged filters, loose installation, or excessive airflow speed.
